Mapping and accessing network drives before the Windows log on completes opens up some security vulnerabilities. Microsoft fixed that some years ago, and one of the consequences is that mapped drives don't always reconnect at PC startup. So that is part of the puzzle also. It may have nothing to do with name resolution.
Again, the way to test this is to try accessing the mapped drives a few times after bootup, and see if the situation clears by itself.
