Cannot add readynas to SBS 2003 Domain

Hello,
We have a straightforward AD on windows small business server 2003 (server 2003 standard). I had a readynas pro 2 connected to a switch acting as a storage location for backups from backupexec 2010 running on the server. It worked no problem, the other day the backup job stalled and I realized I could not access the NAS from the servers explorer (typing in \\backup, the host name), it said network path not found. I could however, find it and browse the shares on the workstations.

I didnt even know I could add the drive to Active Directory until I began trying to fix my other problem. However it does appear that this is the best option for me. I tried adding it with the following settings:

Domain Type: ADS
NetBIOS Name: DENISASSOCIATES
Domain Name (FQDN): DENISASSOCIATES.LOCAL
New object OU: No (blank)
Restrict Accounts to OU: No (blank)
Domain Controller: 192.168.16.2
Username/password is right
Unchecked display users

Get the message Unsuccessful joining domain DENISASSOCIATES, Unsuccessful starting CIFS windbin service.

When I try to access the drive via explorer on either the server or a workstation via \\backup or \\192.168.16.9 (hostname and static IP) I get the message

The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed

DNS Settings are correct, primary is the domain controller/server 192.168.16.2, 2nd and 3rd dns servers are the correct web ones the rest of the computers are on.

Any help? This is kind of critical because my backup is in limbo. I greatly appreciate all the help

  • It seems that the settings were correct. Make sure that NTP server is also insync and is pointed to the domain. Try also to configure "Domain Type: Domain". Besides those I would recommend that you contact support.
  • Did you check if there is already an object created for this in AD by the same name? Delete that and add the NAS to domain with appropriate permissions. It should work.
  • Are both network connections on the same network? Also make sure you're running the latest firmware for your model(can't tell since we don't know which model you have, or what firmware version).
