Cannot connect to NAS via Mac Finder

Thanks Stephen B. I am not sure, if I understand. I can access the NAS in the browser with its IP address and with its host name. My problem is that I cannot access the SMB shares in the Finder.
In the Finder click Go > Connect to Server. In Server Address enter smb://ip.address.of.nas where ip.address.of.nas is the I.P. address of your NAS showing in RAIDar e.g. 192.168.0.100, and try connecting.
YES! This does seem to work. What does this mean?
So why is it that I cannot connect via the Finder sidebar, but via the "Connect to Server..." dialog? It works with both, the IP adress as well as the NAS name. I am using the NAS as a backup target, so I want the Mac to wake up and connect and backup (using "Carbon Copy Cloner"). And it did work before, but not anymore. Any suggestions?
