Hello my moderator freinds,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I carried out a 'soft reboot' of the NAS (held in the reset button for 5 seconds until the disc lights flashed once).
This reset the unit and connected to the router without a problem.
One final question - does this reset the login\password to the NAS, as i cannot get in to the admin page

What you did is a called an OS reinstall.
It does reset the admin password ("netgear1" for v1 platforms, "password" for the newer ones). It also reset your IP configuration to use DHCP.
Other settings were not changed, and the data should be intact.
