many thanks for the great suggestions,
though my knowledge of these things is very slight.
i've really had little to do with the setup of this machine.
i've used it for some years now, and when it goes down,
it's always too hard to recover it
except through a total hit and miss method.
"When you say you were using the 3500 as a switch, do you mean that nothing was connected to the WAN port?"
from lack of knowledge, i'm not really sure, but the modem was connected, and three of the four ethernet ports were full.
we didn't use the wireless either.
"You can try a direct connect with a mac (wiring the ethernet cable directly to the mac NIC)."
this is something i may be able to handle..
do you mean one ethernet cable from one of my macs straight to the nas?
as the nas is setup in an out of the way place this could be awkward but i could
try it.
do you think that this could fix things so that when i went back to the normal network setup
the nas would be back to how it functioned previously?
thanks again!
