I moved the contents of the destination folder to another folder, then deleted the destination folder.
Then, probably crucially, I created a new destination folder (with identical name and location, obviously) using the ReadyNAS web interface.
After that, the errors stopped. However, since then, I have backed up the whole USB drive and reformatted it, again using the ReadyNAS web interface - my assumption being that whatever privileges are required, they will established by the device creating them, if that makes any sense.
