Disable Home Directory by creating new share with same name?
If I don't want to have Home folders and I don't want to use the ssh solutions posted on the forum to remove them (this for example), then can I simply remove the Home folders by creating a new share using the same name as the Home folder name?
When I do this, I see this message on the ReadyNAS web UI:
New Share
Creation of [New/Home Share Name] share leads to disabling of home folder of user [New/Home Share Name]. Do you want to continue?
What does "disable" mean? Is "disable" the same as "delete" or "remove"?
Is there any way to reverse this and get a Home directory back using this same name if I later change my mind?

What firmware are you running? OS 6.x???
What I do myself is disable all file sharing protocols for home in the NAS web ui. After that I never see home shares.
Then just don't create a share with a matching name, and you can enable/disable the feature as you please.

Running OS 6

My concern with this approach is then I wouldn't get a Home directory for a Mac to put Time Machine backups on the RN. (See here.)

Sorry, I don't think I understand you there.
If I already have Home directories or the RN keeps making new Home directories, then can I get rid of them ("disable" / "delete") by creating new shares using the same name?

Got it - I'm not a Mac owner, so that didn't occur to me.

Not something I've tried, but I think it would only disable the sharing. If you have a spare disk, you could test it. Just power down and remove your current disks (labeling by slot), and do a fresh install on the spare disk. Then see what happens. Power down and replace the original disks when you are finished with the test.
You should also see if time machine works when you've replaced the home folder with a public share.
