Dreaded "corrupt root" on ReadyNas Ultra 2 - no backup - HELP

I have a customer who has a ReadyNas Ultra 2 drive.  It has failed with a "corrupt root" error.  They did not realize their backup was not running so we have no recent backup.

Is there any way to recover the data by say connecting the disk to a linux PC? I tried that but am getting "superblock" errors.  If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.  I have also tried a "OS REINSTALL" but that did not help either.  Thanks in advance.

  • Here is something I found on another thread: Could someone elaborate (maybe with exact commands as I'm not a linux pro)

Here's my experience of recovery data from the ReadyNAS DUO:

    1. Connect one of the drives of your ReadyNAS DUO to a computer with Linux OS (ubuntu, Debian is - no matter!).
    2. Install "lvm2" for support LVM, if you do not have it
    3. Type "pvdisplay"
    4. Type "vgdisplay" and see VG name of your volume (this is just "с")
    5. Activate your volume with the command "vgchange -a y /dev/c/c" (where /dev/c/c is yoor LVM)
    6. Install "debugfs" if you do not have it
    7. Type "debugfs -c -b 16384 /dev/c/c" (16384 - it is blocksize)
    8. To restore folders recursively you want to use rdump <folder on your LVM> </destination folder> (destination folder must be exist!)

    It is not necessary ext2fuse!

The Ultra 2 does RAID differently to the Duo.

First you would want to check the health of the disks and state of the array and then if it looks O.K. proceed to start the array and see if you can mount the volume read-only.

You would need to use packages such as smartmontools, mdadm and lvm2.

Especially seeing this is your first time you may wish to clone the disks first. If you do something you shouldn't it is possible to seriously affect the chances of data recovery.
