Drive Mapping and Performance
Hello,
I have always accessed my NAS just using the default UNC; however, I have read a little about drive mapping.
My question is this: What are the benefits of drive mapping? Are there any benefits to performance?
I guess it is a little obvious that I am speaking about accessing it using Windows File Explorer.
Thanks for the replies.

- NhellieVirtuosoBasically the main benefit of mapping a drive is the ease to access share/volume, instead of typing the address of the server on a file explorer you can directly go to a share with a click or two without browsing through the shares. Performance-wise it should be the same as accessing your NAS manually.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOne disadvantage of drive mapping is that some malware (for instance cryptolocker) can corrupt files in mapped drives, but not UNCs.
A related option is to right click on computer and choose "add a network location". That puts a shortcut to the NAS share in computer, but doesn't assign it a drive letter.
I have one PC that I use frequently for moving data to the NAS. I use drive letters on that one for convenience. On other machines I just type \\nas into explorer, and pick the right share. I also put some shortcuts on the desktop of the machines my wife uses, for her convenience.
