How much risk are you willing to take with your data? If you don't have a backup, I suggest that you should focus on getting the data safely off the NAS first.
You could then play with USB recovery, etc. However, there is some risk with USB recovery that the NAS eprom will get corrupted [L3 support can fix that] At this point, I'd probably pull off the data, factory reset the NAS, and then rebuild it.
