Ok old thread but some ideas thrown around here pointed me in the right direction so I wanted to contribute. I am uncertain of the techy specs but I am guessing what I am doing is not actually streaming rather opening from a remote location.
I got this working by setting up the FTP on the NAS, setting up the port forwarding and then play the files with the android app BUZZ player. Real simple and works like a charm with my SGS2. I can stream video over 3g and it works great if the 3g reception is good. The only thing that nerfs functionality is if the reception is bad but that is rarely the case for me as I live in a major city. I mostly use this when I am out on business or staying at hotels so then there is always wifi :D
Hope this helps.
