Wow! What timing, I was having this problem myself and also came across this thread. I figured out the async option too and then came here to post my solution and someone else had beat me to it :) Excellent work venzi!!!
So, I too had to install SSH and then used Putty to login to the readyNAS and then the editor VI to edit /etc/exports
Once you add the async option to your share, it will perform as other services do on the readyNAS, and this performance was confirmed with my ESXIi host as well.
Once very important note however... I would recommend that you setup all your shares before you edit the exports file, because it seems if you use the readyNAS dashboard after editing, and add a share to the system, the async option will be removed from the exports file and will need to be added again.
