hi all, after about five hours I gave up and decided to contact customer support. They walked me through the issue, got me to carry out a factory reset and would you believe it this fixed it.
I can now turn it on and off without losing data and without having to go through set-up. My host name is also retained.

Thanks for all your help. Now if i can just figure out a way to copy my files to the NAS at a speed above 9mb/s i'll be happy.
