DUO write to USB EXT3 > 2.8MB/s speed it up to 11MB/s

Hello guys,
I know this question has been discussed over and over, I've been wandering in the forum for hours now BUT I didn't find any good reason about my experience.

Here is my situation :
I'm trying to RSYNC directly from my NAS to the USB drive and here's the result :

NAS:/c/media/Videos/Action# rsync --progress * /USB/USB_HDD_4/media/Videos/Action
Movie1.avi
731592704 100% 2.80MB/s 0:04:09 (xfer#1, to-check=6/7)
Movie2.avi
736264192 100% 2.79MB/s 0:04:11 (xfer#2, to-check=5/7)
...

2.8MB/s ... that's... slow, isn't it?

My USB drive has been formated through frontview in EXT3 and this is supposed to be the fatest format... right?

Well that's strange but I have speed it up by copying it from my computer (MBP) through the NAS to the USB drive connected to it…

macbookpro:user$ rsync --progress Movie3.avi /Volumes/USB_HDD_4/media/Videos/Action
Movie3.avi
665716736 100% 10.22MB/s 0:01:02 (xfer#1, to-check=0/1)

sent 665798094 bytes received 42 bytes 10652770.18 bytes/sec
total size is 665716736 speedup is 1.00

I don't know what you think but I'm quite surprised the NAS is able to write FASTER through LAN to USB than from himself to USB…
Maybe I'm missing something here… any thoughts ?

My specs :
Journalisation : ON
High USB write : ON
Jumbo Frames : ON
Protocol : AFP
1GB Netgear switch
USB HDD format : EXT3

PS : here are the stats for a direct copy from PC to NAS :

Movie4.avi
710760448 100% 23.18MB/s 0:00:29 (xfer#1, to-check=0/1)

sent 710847304 bytes received 42 bytes 24096520.20 bytes/sec
total size is 710760448 speedup is 1.00

Tadaaa... !

Rsync is resource intensive. Your Mac has a much faster CPU as well as more & faster RAM. Your results aren't surprising at all. As your Mac can do the calculations on its end much quicker backup performance is going to be considerably better.
