eda500 options (is this thing problematic?)
Hey guys I'm at my wits end with the eda500. If you look at this thing the wrong way it starts resyncing.
I just got 2 new 8TB reds for my main RN312. In my eda500 I have four 4TB greens and ...

Thanks for the advice. I have used wdidle on the greens to max the headparking delay. That was back when i was using freenas.
So u think it will make all the difference, getting the nas type hdds?
Aren't those drives ur using desktop drives? That list doesn't list my new wd 80efax drives.

Yep, the ST4000DM000 is labled as a desktop drive, but it's tolerant to rotational vibration, and doesn't have any of the funky spindown power tricks. Seagate also approves it for server and DAS use.
I think it'll make all the difference in the world. I've heard nothing but bad things about the green drives in a NAS.

I don't recommend desktop drives for NAS use myself - I'd have gone with Ironwolf (or Red in the case of WDC). Though Seagate does certify the DM for NAS use, there have been a lot of early failures reported here with the DM drive. Most were with the 3 TB model, and it is possible that Seagate has addressed the problem in the newer models.
As far as the EDA500 goes, there are a lot of issues reported here from folks using it. Of course, people who post usually are reporting problems, but I'm not seeing any "hey, it works great for me responses" either. Many report that it doesn't perform well - very slow during resyncs in particular.

FWIW I did install the first-generation greens in my first ReadyNAS (NV+ v1), and didn't change the head parking time. The NAS is still running with the original drives. Load cycle counts are in the stratosphere, but they still are functioning ok. Of course those drive models aren't available any more.
But I don't recommend them for NAS use - there are certainly better options. NAS-purposed models have worked out well for me.

I don't have any problems with my EDA500 with WD Red drives installed as far as reliability is concerned. The scrub, however, is exceedingly slow (takes days) and bogs down the system way more than it should (especially considering how slow it's going). It's the use of a SATA port multiplier that causes that, I believe. My Sans Digital 5-drive SATA box (EDA500 alternative) behaves the same.

Hello Sandshark,
What is the model of that SANS Digital enclosure? Is it compatible with the RN31x series?
I agree with the scrub. Scrub will bring my RN316 down to it's knees (either the head unit, or the EDA500), and almost completely unusable. I have to reboot it to regain control.
