Do you use a static IP address in the NAS?
If so, it might not be configured correctly (no DNS server being a common omission).

no luck.
I tried this and also other combinations, including using another account (yahoo). However same error pops up.
Any other ideas on how to solve this problem? Is there an option to escalate this to netgear without having to pay for it?

Yes, its a static IP address.
I will check what happens if I quickly change it to DHCP.

"check for updates" also needs internet access, so you can also see if it finds the update server.

Problem solved, well done!
Network settings was the problem! It was still using a couple of old settings before I had changed certain network conditions. It was not replicated on the readynas and for this reason was not connecting a 100%. Changing the settings correctly on the readynas and rebooting it solved the problem and emails are send and received!
