There are two possible fixes. One is to provide a patch that would add TLS 1.2 support to the ReadyNAS. The other is to provide a patch that removes HTTPS from the NAS's web server configuration. Neither is available at this point.

The newest ReadyNAS (for example, RN214, RN426, RN526, RN628) all run 6.x.x firmware also called OS-6. Those NAS don't have this problem.
Although Netgear doesn't support this, it is possible to convert your Ultra to run the newer firmware. I've done what with my own Pro 6. It gives me more features, and support for newer protocols (including SMB 3). The process requires a factory reset, so you would need to have a full backup of all your data.

You should still be able to access the shares using file manager.
As far as browsers are concerned: Your older NAS only supports TLS 1.0. The browsers have recently dropped support for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1. So they will no longer connected to Frontview.
As you found, you can still use Internet Explorer.
There are some folks (not Netgear) working on patches. But in your case, I suggest that you consider converting your Ultra 6 to run OS-6.

I have an ultra4 which I bought in 2011 with 4.2.31 firmware. As the system is already running the latest firmware, can I load the image directly from local drive ?
Can I upgrade directly to 6.10.7?

I am glad to have a new OS with more modern features as the 4.2.31 was too limited and obsolet

No, you can't directly install the firmware.
Before you begin, I recommend that the system be upgraded to have at least 2 GB of RAM. (2 GB is easily done and affordable in an Ultra 4). All x86 systems built for OS-6 have at least 2 GB, and several folks running with the stock 1 GB of RAM in 4.2.x. systems have found it isn't enough.
The steps are
(Optionally) make sure the latest BIOS is installed before you do the conversion. To do this you install http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/x86/4.2/BIOS_Update_Package_0.5-x86.bin as an add-on and reboot the NAS. Do this after you backup the NAS. This isn't necessary, but if you so want to update the bios it is easiest to do it prior to conversion
Basic instructions for the conversion itself are
- BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP
- Upload PREPR4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin as an add-on using the ReadyNAS web gui, but do not reboot afterwards (avoids the need to do manual factory resets)
- Upload R4toR6_6.9.5.bin using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update
- After you upload the addon+firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default.
- Go through the setup process on the converted NAS
- Update the NAS to the current OS 6 (check for updates will work).
- Restore files from the backup.
Netgear won't provide paid support on a converted NAS, so that is one consideration. There is a small risk that the process could fail, and if that were to happen it might not be possible to get the NAS running again.

Yes I am in the process of transfering everything back to other NAS. In fact, this old Ultra4 which I recently upgraded with 4 Seagate Ironwolf of 4To, since I damaged a 3to harddisk which was not correctly plugged in its bay. And I recycled the 2x2to harddisks for a selfmade NAS (running TrueNas or Open Mediavault, I am still thinking about)
Once the volume is totally empty, I will upgrade the memory with spare parts, 2x2go or 2x4go, according to what I have in spare parts. Should I have to buy some, I won't hesitate to put 2x4go.
However this old Ultra4 is just a dummy featureless storage, backup of a more recent Qnap TVS673. I am just double checking that they are perfectly mirrored as I still haven't found the right application for mirroring a netgear ultra4 with a qnap running QTS 5.0. That what is on the Ultra 4 should already be on the Qnap TVS673 which is the source.
Maybe an upgrade of the ultra 4 to OS6 will offer me more possibilities in regards of playing multimedia and synchronizing storages.

You mean, the jump will be from RAIDiator 4.2.31 to OS 6.9.5 directly ?? Is there no firmware like 6.0.1 I should install before updating with major OS version updates ?
So tomorrow when transfers are completed, I will have a look at the RAM and hopefully I will be able start with firmware updates following your instructions.
Should the update fail, I have 4 4to harddisks which I will find a need for. If it is successfull updating to OS6 will definitely be a win as current RAIDiator 4.2.31 is outdated and limited.

The Ultra 4 has only one memory slot.
