Expanding storage past limit
I own a readynas ultra 4. I am currently in no need of more storage space, but is there any way of bypassing the factory set limit? The ultra 4 apparently can only handle 8TB (4x2TB), is there any way...
Once you have updated the firmware to 4.2.16 or later you can then add drives with larger capacity than 2TB. Take a look at the Hardware Compatibility List: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641
Do note that there are a few expansion limitations:
1. There is a limit of 8TB of online expansion over the life of the volume. If your volume capacity was say 5.4TB when you last did a factory reset you cannot expand it past 13.4TB.
2. You cannot expand a volume past 16TB. If you want a volume with a higher capacity than 16TB you need to do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) with the drives in place.
