External USB NTFS Backup destination path limitation

I wanted to manually backup my ReadyNAS 102 unit. I connected an NTFS formatted USB drive to the front panel USB port.
The Backup parameters I specified were:
Source ==> Share:Backup
Destination ==> External Storage (USB Front)
I created the backup job.
Then I wanted to specify a subdirectory on the USB drive as a destination path. So I went into Settings for this job and selected Destination. The Path field was visible but I could not enter anything here. Nor could I use the Browse button. I saw the following in the User Manual:

'If you select an external storage device that is connected to your ReadyNAS system, you can leave the path blank to back up or recover the data at the top level of the USB device's directory.'

So I'm guessing the phrase 'you can leave the path blank' really means you can't enter a path here.
I guess I can live without this but was curious if anyone has been able to specify a subdirectory path for an external NTFS USB drive backup.

  • I had the same problem with my ReadyNAS 102. It was due to using "quick format" when I formatted my external drive using a Win7 machine. I reformatted the drive, this time performing a complete format, which takes quite a few hours.

    Now when I connect the ext drive to my NAS it shows up in System Overview as a device right next to "data" volume.There is also a button there for unmounting the drive. If I power up the ext drive _after_ I connect it to my NAS it doesn't mount properly. I have to power up the drive _before_ I connect it to the usb port.

    For backup destination I can now select browse and the usb_hdd_1 is available as a share, then there's a button to create a folder on that drive.

    Hope this helps.
  • Thanks

    I'll give that a try next time I do a backup.
