Faulty RAID controller = physically damaged HDDs?

Hi

I’ve had three hard drives from different batches go bad in quick succession in the same drive 1 bay of this six-bay appliance. I tested each drive OK before installing it in the NAS.

Is it possible for a faulty RAID controller to physically damage the drives?

How can I test the RAID controller?

How can I preserve the RAID controller’s settings?

Appreciate any help in advance.

    There is no RAID controller on the ReadyNAS - it's all pure software RAID.

    Potential issue with the backplane, the SATA/power connector in that slot, ... open, carefully dust clean, ensure all PCB (backplane) is/are mounted ok.

      Many thanks, schumaku. I'll do as you suggest.

      EDIT:

      Removed the HDD from the ReadyNAS and ran it through DriveDX again to check its health.

      It shows a rise in the "UDMA CRC Error Count", which DriveDX helpfully suggests could be a result of a bad data cable or power supply unit.

      Which validates your guidance to check the backplane. Even though the appliance is seldom moved, it's possible something has worked free at some point, or the PSU could be failing.

      Details from DriveDX

      === IMPORTANT HEALTH INDICATORS ===
      ID NAME RAW VALUE STATUS

      199 UDMA CRC Error Count 29 100% Warning

        if anything I'd suspect whatever you're using to hook up the drives to the PC you run the test from, not the ReadyNAS.

        What about if you check the drives through smartmontools on the ReadyNAS itself? smartctl -a /dev/<disk>
