File Move/Copy Leads to Lockup

Hi -

Thanks to support on the forums, my ReadyNAS 102 is working pretty well now.

However, I am migrating all data from a DLINK device, which has performed well, and running into problems.

Both with 6.1.1 and the latest beta 2, I have run into lockups when copying files.

It starts, when I connect to the data share as admin, and begin moving (cut/paste) files around within the same window in windows explorer via windows 10.

I will grab several gigs of data, cut, and move up a few levels in the folder structure and then paste.

Within a few moments, I'd get an error that the files cannot be moved because the location is no longer available. Nothing has changed regarding network connectivity - but then I notice I cannot browse the device anymore.

I will go into the admin interface via webpage, and tell it to reboot. It says it does, but then I cannot get into admin interface until I pull the power and plug back in.

I decided to reload the device with factory settings, which made a huge difference. I was able to get all of the data moved back to the device, but as I am moving the data to better places in their respective folders (within the readynas), I get the same behavior as above.

I never had this issue with the DLINK. What might be going on, and how can I fix this? Seems very harmless the type of data moves I am doing, and frankly I have no idea why the NAS would suddenly do this without any errors. I can upload logs if needed.

Can you try setting up a backup job on the RN102 to copy the data directly from the DLINK (avoiding hauling it over the DLINK->PC->RN102 road).

Yes, this is how I originally did it last night. I first used a backup job to copy the data from dlink nas to netgear nas.

Once data was there, I had wanted to use DLNA for my smart TV from nero (seems better than netgear's built in offering), and I installed the app. I then went back to my PC...and mapped the data root folder of the NAS using admin credentials in windows. I navigated to a few folders and started cutting and pasting folders to the appropriate media shares.

in doing so, most worked ok (which did not at first - before I did the factory reset), but a smaller folder seemed to hang up the NAS today.

I can't even get to admin page... I will have to reboot it later from the house. Something is wrong though for this to keep happening.

Got it.  The issue is not related to the dlink, you are reorganizing files on the ReadyNAS.

I'd double-check the disk health via the SMART stats (just in case).

  • Sounds very similar to a problem I had (maybe still have) with our NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 v2  (Model: RND2000-100NAS).

Cloud backup to the vault would cause the unit to 'lock up', no access to the drive over the network, could ping it, but not log on via the web interface.

Had to pull power to get it back to life.

I don't know the root cause, but was able to find ceretain PDF files that when accessed in any way beyond maybe blind copying, would crash the operating system on the device.

I think even right-clicking and pulling up 'properties' would crash the unit.

The PDF files would open fine when copied to a PC.

I did a search-and-destroy on the files, vault backups have been fine since.

I think this may have happened to me again following swapping a drive.

    Dave
