File sharing (via internet) on Duo v1
I have a RN Duo v1 that I'd like to use to host files for access by my family. They would be downloading/uploading files via the internet. With the demise of ReadyNAS Remote, what is my best option? ...

rnxtras.com offers an OwnCloud 10 add-on. There is a small cost, but you also get support. In my opinion that's a good deal. https://rnxtras.com/readynas-os4-sparc
FTPS can also work. FTPS is a secure (encrypted) form of FTP. FileZilla and WinSCP both support it, and there are apps for Android and iOS also. Unfortunately you can't block FTP in the Duo v1, so you'd want to make sure the family is set up to use FTPS. With FTP the credentials are sent unencrypted, so someone malicious might be able to get them. Though if anonymous FTP isn't allowed, and you use solid passwords with FTPS clients, it is still reasonably safe.
Using a VPN is another option. The easiest way to do that is to get a router that has OpenVPN built in. Nighthawk and Orbi routers do have it built in.
You also need DDNS for these solutions - and both Nighthawk and Orbi include a free DDNS service from Netgear. You can also get a free DDNS service from noip.com.
Personally I am more comfortable using a VPN solution with the duo V1, because it hasn't been getting security updates for some time.
FWIW, there are other challenges with the older NAS. The v1 products are limited to SMB 1.0, which is being deprecated by Microsoft. You might also consider upgrading to a new NAS, and using the v1 as a backup. The current entry-level ReadyNAS is the RN212. It has much higher performance and more features than your duo.

I am happy to spend a few euros on the OwnCloud 10 add-on, but I was under the impression that PHP 7.0 or higher (which isn't available for Sparc) is required for it to work. If that isn't the case, it seems like the path of least resistance.
I have a RN102 running OS6 for my own use. I'm just trying to find a job for the DUO, rather than scrapping it.

I think it's safer to forward ports to the RN102 than it is to forward them to the older Duo. Web applications for instance will be using outdated TLS with the Duo. FWIW, my own Duo is still in service as a secondary backup for selected shares on my RN526x.

I don't use OwnCloud myself, but WhoCares_ (who runs rnxtras.com) would include the needed packages in his add-on.
