Being that you're having the issue with local NAS groups and users and I'm having an issue with Windows accounts, I'm venturing a guess that it's an issue with propagation of permissions with the NAS itself.
Just out of curiosity, what protocols are you using for your shares? Currently I'm using CIFS only.
