Fixing read/write speeds (older device but updated to latest OS)
So, I've had this device for some years now and it's done me really well, but recently things have really just slowed up. I've installed the latest OS updates and have plenty of space on drives etc. ...

It looks like your network is only fast ethernet (100 mbits). Can you confirm?
What gives that impression? All my switches and network cards are gigabit, all wired in CAT6
Also, can you give us some more information on your network? For instance, are you accessing the files over wifi or powerline, are there switches on the connection path, etc.
Test was run over ethernet, goes to a netgear switch then NAS
Please do confirm that you are running 5.3.x firmware (if you are running 4.1.x then you actually have a duo v1). Note the labels are confusing to many people, but the firmware version is definitive.
As i said latest OS/firmware, I'm running 6.8.0. The device is a rackmount RN2120v2

Your label says duo v2, which is a very different platform. I can see why you chose that (since RND2120v2 is very close to your part number), but it is incorrect.
It's extremely important that the platform be properly identified - "latest" OS firmware isn't informing enough for me, so I always ask for the actual version. Thx for clarifying.

Your iperf results are consistent with 100 mbits, much less than you should see with gigabit. You might want to check the negotiated speed at the NAS and the PC (and if the switch is managed, also check it on the switch).
You must have ssh access if you've installed iperf. So you can also look at the NAS ethernet stats using ifconfig.

Ah, i typed 2210 not 2120 :)
So, i'm looking down the route of connection link as you say, and i'm seeing it is 100mbit. However, my network card supports 1000mbit as can be seen using ethtool.
I have a GS724Tv4 Netgear switch which this machine is wired to using CAT6. In fact i have a new Unifi Access Point that i installed today and that is listed at:
g6 Access Point Enable Auto 1000 Mbps So, why is this machine Auto negociating slower? Also i can't change this port to 1000Mbps like the on above, the drop down just doesn't have the option?

Stephen, i cannot thank you enough for this enlightenment, somehow a sneaky CAT5a patch cable found its way behind my desk! After connecting a fresh CAT6 i'm connected properly and i'm getting:
[SUM] 0.0-20.0 sec 1.86 GBytes 799 Mbits/sec
So, now that is cleared up how can i test read/writes easily? I don't have windows so this NAS performance tester won't run. Is there an alternative method?

Looks like our posts crossed, I'm glad you sorted out the cable issue.

What operating systems are on your network? OSX, Linux,?
There is a package called LanSpeedTest which does something similar and does run on OSX (http://www.totusoft.com/lanspeed). There's a free "lite" version. All they really do is make some test transfers and time them.

One cause is a bad cable or connector. Gigabit requires all 4 pairs in the cable to be working, if that's not the case the system will often fall back to 100 mbit (which only requires 2 pairs). You could also try a different port in the switch and the NAS, and see if that changes anything.
Also, I had a similar issue with my G724Tv3, and used Netgear support. They had me do a factory reset on the switch, which resolved it. So you might try that (on the switch, not the NAS).
