Full Drive Size Detected with Different Size Drives-Ultra 4
ReadyNAS Ultra 4
X-Raid2, Redundant
I originally started with two 1TB drives, which both showed up at 927GB allocated. Sometime later, I added an additional two 2TB drives. I expected the "allocated" size to be limited to the amount of the smallest drive (i.e. the 927GB from the 1TB drives); however, both 2TB drives showed up as a full 1858GB allocated. In that configuration, I had a single volume with the following details:
Question: Why did my 2TB drives show up as fully allocated? I thought allocation would be limited by the smallest size drive.
Sometime later, I hot swapped one 1TB drive and replaced it with one 3TB drive. The expansion went correctly and the new disk was correctly added to the volume. However, the drive showed up at 1858GB allocated...apparently limited by the size of the 2TB drives.
Current Configuration
Question: Do I have to have two of the same size drives in order to have them both fully allocate--even in an environment where there are mixed size drives? Or, is there some trick I can use to get the 3TB drive to be fully allocated?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1) Not with X-RAID2. It's a dual-layer array. The volume will expand when redundant space can be added. See X-RAID2 in Action
2) You need to add another 3TB disk for the full capacity to be allocated i.e. replacing the 1TB disk with a 3TB disk.
You may also wish to take a look at the X-RAID Volume Size Calculator (see link in my sig).
