As a follow-up, the update to Android really helped with playing media files. I also did some mass chmods to fix some Win 7 issues. In addition, I got a Free player (aVia) from the Android Market and then ultimately settled on the paid GTVBox app. Ugly interface, but it plays everything I throw at it.
Now that my permissions are good, I may try aVia again as its interface was very nice. I want to try Plex, but it doesn't seem to have good reviews on GTV.
