Hard disk failure
Hi,
Last Friday I got message that in our ReadyNas Pro disk 2 has some errors and we need to get ready to replays it. After a weekend when I went to work there was tens of messages from disk 4. I check from frontview that all drives was "green" and shares was still working. Because disk 4 was giving more error I decide to change it first. I unplug disk 4 and put new disk in same slot. Same 3TB hard-drive model that we have many (four if I remember correctly).
First I notice that in frontview disk 2 was marked "dead" but shares was still available. After some hours I now notice that Disk 1 and disk 4 are marked "spare" and disk 2 still "dead". Shares are still available but now I don't know what to do.
Should I wait until "RAID scrubbing" is finished or do what Status says:
EDIT: Just notice that our every 8 weeks scrubbing jobs is that last line. Bad luck that it starts now... But still what I should do?
"On life support - access to volume disabled. To restore volume, shutdown this device, reconnect the disk(s) if they had been inadvertently disconnected, and power the device back on. To avoid permanently rendering the disk unusable, do not reconnect the disk(s) while the power is on."
Mon Jun 16 22:00:08 EEST 2014 RAID scrubbing started on volume C.
Mon Jun 16 21:53:47 EEST 2014 RAID sync finished on volume C.
Mon Jun 16 15:47:41 EEST 2014 RAID sync started on volume C.
Mon Jun 16 15:47:09 EEST 2014 Data volume will be rebuilt with disk 4.
Mon Jun 16 15:46:00 EEST 2014 New disk detected. If multiple disks have been added, they will be processed one at a time. Please do not remove any added disk(s) during this time. [Disk 4]
Mon Jun 16 15:43:23 EEST 2014 If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead. If this disk is a part of a RAID 6 volume, your volume is still protected if this is your first failure. A 2nd disk failure will make your volume unprotected. If this disk is a part of a RAID 10 volume, your volume is still protected if more than half of the disks alive. But another failure of disks been marked may render that volume dead. It is recommended that you replace the failed disk as soon as possible to maintain optimal protection of your volume.

Mon Jun 16 15:43:05 EEST 2014 A disk was removed from the ReadyNAS. One or more RAID volumes are currently unprotected, and an additional disk failure or removal may result in data loss. Please add a replacement disk as soon as possible.

Mon Jun 16 15:42:06 EEST 2014 Blinking disk lcd 4.
Mon Jun 16 13:38:38 EEST 2014 Detected increasing reallocated sector count[17232] on disk 4 [ST3000DM001-9YN166, Z1F0XD1M] 77 times in the past 30 days. This often indicates an impending failure. Please be prepared to replace this disk to maintain data redundancy.

- vandermerweMasterCould you clarify whether you currently have access to the data or not? It a not clear in your post.
Do you have a backup? - JeIlMaAspirantHi,
Update to first post. Because it was systems scrubbling job I just cancel it from frontview. I still have access to folders (shares) and for testing I get some almost every file open. One didn't open but could be something else. Latest backup is from weekend and now I am taking incremental backup.
Because I can access to folders I don't beleve that disk 1 and 4 are spares (=not in use). Should I restart device after inc backup and hope that everything is "fine". - vandermerweMasterComplete the backup.
Power down.
Remove each disk and test it using vendor tools, start with disk 2. Remember to label the disks according to their a lot number.
Reinsert the disks with power off after all have been tested.
If any disks show errors during testing then make a note.
Power on.
Post results. - JeIlMaAspirantProblem solved by Netgear support.
I don't really know what they have done when device was in Tech mode and they was login into device. What I know is that disk 1 wierd spare status gomes because it was not included for md3 (for some reason). After change broken disk it notice that disk 1 is not included to that md3 so it mark it to spare.
After some restarting and change two broken disk device is now full operation. Please do not try to follow this case if you have similar problems. I don't know what has been done so restarting or change disk in wrong "way" could cause more damage.
Thanks to Netgear to fix this issue.
