Help! -Readynas Pro Business Edition - "Volume scan found errors that it could not easily correct. "

Twice in the past month the ReadyNAS has frozen while streaming video and became unresponsive.  I held the power button in until it shut off then started up again and it went into the "Checking C:" routine.  The first time it reported that it found errors and fixed them.  The second time was last night and it has reported the following:

Volume scan found errors that it could not easily correct. Please ensure that you have current backups of all valuable data before performing a full volume scan by rebooting the NAS through Frontview with the volume scan option enabled.

/dev/c/c:

/dev/c/c: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
	(i.e., without -a or -p options)

After receiving the email above I successfully shut the machine down normally and have not turned it back on.

I know next to nothing about the inner workings of the ReadyNAS OS.  Would someone please be so kind to advise me as to what might be going on here and suggest any remedial steps to take.

ReadyNAS is populated with 5 - 1TB drives configured as  X-RAID2 and is running RAIDiator 4.2.30

Thank you

Jim

  • Try booting it up using the "skip volume check" option on page 19-20 here: http://www.readynas.com/download/documentation/HM/ReadyNAS_Ultra_UltraPlus_Pro_HW_13April11.pdf

Then download the logs in case someone from Netgear wants to see them.  Look at the disk health (health page, click on the SMART+ tab for each disk).  And see if there are other disk-related errors - ATA counts, reallocated sectors, pending sectors, etc.

Don't change the file system contents either (don't add files, delete them, move them, etc).

Don't ignore this advice.  Your data is clearly at risk.
