    Answering my own question (in case others need to know):  Yes, deleting those files appears to work and have no deleterious effects.  NAS now reports alerts are not set up, does not send any, and does not complain about any errors.

    As stated in the original message, they are /etc/frontview/alert.conf and /etc/msmtprc.  You must use SSH to delete them.
