As mentioned earlier. I turned on CIFS and then accessed the sparsebundle via connect to server and connect to "smb://ip.address.of.nas/c/.timemachine"
There were two sparsebundles for some reason so deleted the one which hadn't been updated that day. It took about 20hrs to delete but got back 300Gb on the NAS drive so very happy. Now with the new space I'm not getting the Out of space messages and all is good.
Thanks again to everyone who has been on this thread and made the task a lot easier with your input.
