If it notices a different timestamp or filesize Rsync will then do the calculations necessary to transfer just the changes to the file across.

Anyways, regarding the size or timestamp. IF there is a slight corruption during the transfer, I assume the target file's timestamp stays the same as the source file's timestamp. Will even the slightest corruption result in a file size difference that can/will be detected by the Rsync process?
