It is possible to do it this way, but not recommended.
The drives are not designed to be removed an reinserted as frequently as this.
You are better off using the RAID protection against drive failure and using an external drive as your backup - put your extra drive into a cheap enclosure and use this to do regular scheduled backups via USB.
