Well, if the manual says you "must" do it, then I don't know what else you can do.
I don't use the feature myself, so maybe there is a trick. Let's see if someone else replies...
SpoilerIf you want to increase the size of the sparse bundle, you must delete the sparse bundle and create a new Time Machine backup.
