If you have share security already enabled, then upgrading past 4.1.8 should not disable it. A factory reset will remove it, but an upgrade or firmware reinstall will not.
AFAIK, the share security in 4.1.13 functions the same way as the older firmware. The issue is that Windows has changed over time, and that mode has compatibility issues with the newer versions of Windows.
