Insanely slow copying 106GB from Mac Mini to NV+

Rebooted everything. "Preparing to copy" stays up for hours using SMB or AFP.
Copy using muCommander (shows status) dies after 70GB+ on SMB, locks up after 96GB on AFP (file is Version-1.apversion that it dies copying).
Anyone know how to make this copy work, or has the ReadNAS NV+ eaten my iPhoto library?
