The clustered vmware hosts can share the lun because they're aware of eachother and the services used to handle the clustering manage access to the LUN. The same occurs in a clustered windows server environment. However windows 7 machines cannot be clustered. Having multiple clients unaware of eachother writing to the same block level device(the LUN in this instance) usually results in data corruption.
