iTunes - no write access for iTunes Media folder

I'm still a bit new to all of this, feel free to show me up with your superior knowledge!

I've got a ReadyNAS Duo that i've had for about 5 years. I've only recently started to use it for it's intended purposes, and it's causing me some issues with Windows 7. First a bit of context:

I'm using the ReadyNAS for a few reasons, one for music (it's linked to my SONOS system), two for backing up documents and pictures of my family, and third (and most problematic) is for streaming video around the house to two Xbox 360's. It's permanently switched on, left in a media cupboard upstairs happily buzzing away. I've set up five shares:

- Documents (obviously really)
- Movies (all my mp4 DVD copies)
- Music (my iTunes collection)
- Other movies (home movies of my family)
- Pictures (obvious again!)

My PC Laptop can see them all fine. They are all CIFS shares, all with read/write access. They way my system is set-up is that a have a 1TB external hardrive where I actually store all my documents, movies, pictures and music in 5 separate folders. The NAS just simply replicates this entire drive via a weekly sync (via SyncToy 2.1), only adding/updating/removing any changes.

Problem : Struggling to add new music to iTunes on external hard-drive

You might ask 'how is this relevant to the ReadyNAS'? Personally, I think it's linked. But essentially, when I put a CD into iTunes to rip to my library (stored on my external hard drive), on some (but not all) CD's I get this message:

"The file X couldn't be converted

You don't have write access for your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it. To change permissions, right click your iTunes media folder in Explorer, and choose properties."

Of course, I've done that and had a look. For all users on my computer, they appear to have full access. Despite this, the iTunes Media folder continues to have a little padlock on it. It's very odd that it happens for some CD's, but not others as well.

Any ideas? My assumption is that it is something to do with the ReadyNAS box and the fact that elements of the iTunes Media folder are being copied and then shared on the NAS box.

If you open iTunes go to edit\preferences and click on "Advanced" it will show you the iTunes media folder location. Knowing where it is will likely help you diagnose this.
  • I fixed it.

Literally was as simple as finding the folder, right clicking 'Share with', and theb selecting 'Homegroup (Read/Write)'.

I had to do it with a few specific folders, (iTunes Media as well as the Music folder), but it worked a charm.
