Make sure you have a backup and then try it and see if the software even recognises the partition as something it can work with.
But I'm not seeing any real time savings. Making a backup, installing the new drive, and restoring the backup will probably be as fast (or faster) than backing up, cloning/expanding - and won't require the experimentation.
