Mac OS Search Utility

Can anyone recommend a free Search Utility for Mac?

Spotlight can't search my ReadyNAS Pro 4 NAS Servers

Also, is there a feature 'wish list' submission page for Netgear. Still shocked how backward this is! pull your fingers out chaps

  • Couldn't get that software to play ball. Are there other solutions you know of? paid or free?
    Cheers!
  • As per your other thread I use locatedb when I need to search. Not ideal, but works for me as I'm more a command line user
  • Does anyone know of a Netgear NAS wishlist?

We wanted to add integrated Sportlist search from Mac OSX. We have had no joy with free search utilities apps, even looked into teh new Alfred Mac App which doesn't work. We wanted to highlight to Netgear the need for a better Mac Spotlight integration
  • Thanks - EasyFind worked for me on Lion 10.7.3.
Have just bought a ReadyNAS Ultra 2 and been transferring all my music to it but wanted to separate out my flacs into a different folder. Finder was sadly not up to the task but after a short scan, EasyFind worked a treat. Having to install and use another app just to search for some files is not ideal, will the functionality be added in a future Radiator update does anyone know?
  • I have a ReadyNAS Pro and I am experiencing the same issues on my Mac running 10.7. Not only does searching the ReadyNAS take a long time, but it does not return accurate results. For example, I search for files with certain words in the filename, and I only get a few results even though I know there are more. Also, there is no progress indicator in the Finder to show the status of the search. So I am left wondering whether the search is complete or not. Slower search speed is understandable since the ReadyNAS does not use a Spotlight index. But the lack of accuracy is unacceptable.

In all fairness, the inability of Macs to search ReadyNAS devices is not entirely Netgear's fault. This issue goes beyond Netgear. Let's put the blame where it belongs. It is Apple's arrogance/shortsightedness that we cannot reliably search a ReadyNAS, a Windows server, a Linux server, or anything that is not shared from another Mac.

Apple should not assume that Mac users will only connect to other Macs, or that Mac users will only search for files on Mac computers. Mac OS should be able to search for files regardless of the file sharing protocol or the operating system of the remote host. When connected to non-Mac systems, Mac OS should be able to perform ordinary filename searches without requiring indexing. Mac OS certainly had this capability before Spotlight ever existed. And as others have pointed out, the Terminal seems to be capable of straight-up searching unlike the "Finder" (emphasis mine). Is that Netgear's fault too?

Instead of blaming Netgear, Mac users should be telling Apple to fix the broken searching in Mac OS:

  • +1 for EasyFind. I find that spotlight is too obnoxious in general, I disable it for all local drives except the boot drive, but then I never end up using it anyway. EasyFind takes a bit longer to find stuff because its not indexed, but it has a zillion search options and it just works.
  • I finally found a good one that index: foxtrot personal search

it is unfortunately not free but the 30days tryout was enough to convince me that they could do what apple has not been able to do in years.

The next major update to Netatalk will add some Spotlight search functionality. I hope NetGear adds this to ReadyNAS OS 6.
