Maximum Path length? Input/Output errors

I am repeatedly getting errors while running a backup job to from the ReadyNas Duo to a file server. Most of the files backed up properly, however I am now (daily) getting error messages such as:

Error encountered copying data from source path /Management/ ==> //servername123/Airport/NASBackup due to unknown reason. Please see log.

cp: cannot stat '/job_002//NASBackup/./Clint/DocumentsBackup/Documents and Settings/torpc/Desktop/Clints Documents/Binders and Programs/Training Programs/Personnel Training Program/Presentation Files/Slides/Slide105.JPG': Input/output error

It is not always the same filenames, but sometimes it is.

I am running the latest firmware. The back up type is a local share to Remote: Windows/NAS. There are two backup jobs- the first has no issues.

I am thinking perhaps it's the path is just too long, but I have no idea what the maximum length is.

Maximum file name+path length for Windows is 260 characters. Possibly you are exceeding that?

Is there a limitation on the length from the NAS point of view?
  • The particular length that StephenB would be referring to is due to Windows limitations. The ReadyNAS will look at it in the term of bytes. 255 bytes would be the cut-off point if I recall correctly.
  • This looks like a job for Long Path Tool. It helped me in a smiliar situation. http://PathTooDeep.com
