mds: (Error) during fresh backup

I just replaced the hard drive in my MacBook Pro 17 8GB (Early 2009) and thought it might be an expedient time to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

I had some difficulty getting the Time Machine backup going because I got an error saying that there was insufficient space for the full backup on the Time Machine sparsebundle even though there would be if earlier backups were removed as per Time Machine's modus operandi. Anyway, I eventually deleted the sparsebundle using the ssh commands I found on here and everything seemed to be going well. The initial backup started and it said that it would take 19 hours - so I went out and left it to it.

I came back a few hours later expecting the job to be about a quarter done but there was an error which I stupidly didn't take note of and Time Machine promptly stopped. I checked the Console log and it said:

I can see that Spotlight is involved but that's my limit interpreting Console logs; this one, at least.

I have restarted the backup and it says that it will be about 22 hours so I will wait and see but I am curious why it stopped earlier in case the problem arises again. Can anybody advise, please?

  • which readynas unit do you use? and how much capacity for timemachine did you set in readynas console?
