Migrate from ReadyNAS 314 to ReadyNAS 516
Hello, I am looking to migrate my 4 disks from my ReadyNAS 314 to purchasing a new ReadyNAS 516. Can someone provide me step by step instructions on what I need to do to move over? Will ...
- Jul 24, 2016Hi. Yes, it's that easy. All data but also settings are stored on the HDDs.
So...
1) shutdown the RN314
2) leave the RN516 shutdown
3) move the HDDs from RN314 to RN516
4) boot up the RN516
That's it.
In some situations, it's good to make sure the firmware stored on the flash of the new NAS is up to date by doing a factory default on a scratch disk and update the firmware before doing the migration.
If you want to do that:
1) leave the RN314 alone
2) insert a temporary HDD in the RN516 (it will be wiped)
3) use the boot menu to perform a factory default on the RN516
4) once the RN516 is running, access the GUI and update the firmware
5) once the firmware is up to date, shutdown the RN516
6) shutdown the RN314
7) remove the temporary HDD from RN516
8) move the HDDs from the RN314 to the RN516
9) boot up the RN516

Just following up for anyone else that does this, omicron's intructions worked perfectly, make certain to do the extra step of updating the firmware on the new unit before swapping disks, I almost braved not doing it but then did. Brand new ReadyNAS 516 ordred from Amazon (supplier: Netgear) yesterday and delivered today came with 6.0.8 lol

Hi jhagg,
I'm glad you've followed omicron_persei8's advice in updating the new chassis' firmware before putting the disks in. I'm also glad that it worked fine.
Kind regards,
