Migrate X-RAID Disk to new NAS

Hello all...

I'm using RNDP400 with 4 x 3TB HDD (X-RAID setup). Firmware already upgrade to OS 6.10.9 and all system running normal for couple of years.

Now I just get new RNDP600-100 still in diskless condition in factory setting. So I believe the firmware still OS 4.

I need advise the reliable step if I want migrate existing full array of HDD to diskless RNDP600 :

1. Is it possible to switch off RNDP400 then move full array of HDD to diskless RNDP600 (also in power off condition) then just Power ON without upgrading the OS 4 to OS 6?

2. worst case, if I must upgrade RNDP600 OS 4 to OS 6 before do the migration I must prepare new HDD. how big size that OS 4 support? 6TB or 8TB make sense?

Please advise.. and thanks before

    No, that won't work.

Pre-conversion, you should upgrade the RAM to at least 2 GB (I'd go with 2x2GB myself) prior to conversion. I also recommend trying the spare disk in every bay, just to make sure all bays work prior to conversion.  Other pre-conversion steps you might consider is upgrading the bios, and backing up the VPD.

You only need one spare disk in order to convert the Pro-6 to OS-6.  Then after conversion, you'd power down and migrate the disks.  I don't think there is any size restriction (as long as you are only using one drive).  8 TB would certainly work.

This is the first generation (v1) Pro-6, with a E2160 processor.  The v2 (-200) has a faster E5300 processor.  It is possible to upgrade the processor if you want (perhaps to an E7600).

  • Many thanks for advise Stephen !

    I have another questions :

    1. How many RAM RNDP600 can handle?
    2. for processor upgrade, can I pick any as long it's LGA 755 support including XEON?
    3. if I put new X-RAID array like 3 x 6TB which is bigger that older array, is there any simple way to make an 100% exact clone from RNDP400 to RNDP600?

The ceiling is 8 GB (2x4GB).  But compatible 4GB sticks are rare, and expensive.  So 2x2GB is a practical limit, and is enough.

Not sure about that.  People here have successfully upgraded to E7600, Q6600, X3210, X3230 (and possibly some others).  You do need to be careful on cooling. Definitely update the BIOS before upgrading the CPU.

Personally I've manually recreated the config settings and then used rsync backup jobs to migrate each share.  There are potentially some shortcuts you can take, but I haven't used them myself.  The "private" home shares are a bit trickier, but I personally I've never used them (and turn off all file sharing protocols for home).

Though I wouldn't go with 6TB drives myself, I'd go with something larger.  You could maybe start with 2x10 TB (slightly larger than your current 4x3TB array), or perhaps 2x12 TB.  In any case, purchase either NAS-purposed or enterprise-class drives.  Most desktop class mechanical drives are now SMR, which is not a good choice for RAID.

If you are planning to keep both NAS in service (and if the existing disks are healthy), then consider migrating the existing disks to the Pro-6, and starting over with RAID-1 on the Pro 4.  You have more bays on the Pro-6, so you have more expansion options.
