Missing Disk Space on Share

I recently had a warning that the space on my ReadyNAS Duo (v1) (2x2TB) was down to the last 300GB so I bought a 1TB external HDD, sorted out the least important 500GB or so of files on one of the shares and then after I copied them to the HDD, I deleted them from my ReadyNAS Duo.

At first, the folders from which the files were deleted said that they had several GB of content even though they were empty but now they say they have no content but the disk space has only increased by about 200GB. I know that after my purge there has been over 550GB of filed removed - which I can easily determine by comparing the content of the external HDD to the ReadyNAS share.

I have rebooted the ReadyNAS Duo and run volume scan and fixed quotas but the space has not been shown as being available.

Where is it? Can somebody advise me please. As well as worrying that there is a problem with my ReadyNAS Duo, I'm feeling that I wasted £60 on a hard drive.

  • Although I do not have Recycle Bin enabled, using Path Finder (a Mac utility) I discovered that there is an invisible folder called .recycle which contains 423GB of data which I am now deleting and the ree space is slowly returning.

I'm not sure if this was technically the best thing to do but as Recycle bin is not enabled, I figured the folder did not contain anything whic would not automatically be replaced if Recycle Bin was enabled.
