NAS fell and hit the ground...

Question

ReadyNAS NV+, with four 2tb drives.&nbsp; The shelf it was on in the basement collapsed, and NAS hit the concrete floor.&nbsp; At least 3 of the 4 drives had popped out upon impact (still in their slots, but had popped out the front slightly).&nbsp; It was still powered on.&nbsp; I unplgged it, reseated the drives, and plugged it back in.&nbsp; It has been doing checkfs overnight, and seems to be hung at 64%.&nbsp; Everything "sounds" fine, drives seemed to spin up and there are no weird noises.&nbsp; Last night the RAIDar app showed the NAS online, had IP address, and 4 good drives, and checking filesystem..&nbsp; this morning RAIDar shows no devices connected to the network.&nbsp; I can still ping it though.&nbsp;What do I do with a hung check-fs?&nbsp; Assuming it makes no more progress, I will give it some time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Assuming XRAID/RAID5, you can try booting with each set of three and see if it will mount a degraded volume from them.

Yes it is RAIDX..&nbsp; Does a hung check-fs indicate a drive failure?&nbsp; Won't I lose the array if I picked the wrong one to pull out?&nbsp; Or can it be done in a read-only type mode?

Possible there is drive damage.&nbsp; If you start with the NAS powered down you can boot up with any drive removed.&nbsp; Make sure the NAS is powered down before you try again with a different drive.

You unfortunately can't boot up read-only, but you can boot up skipping the file system check.&nbsp; The details depends on exactly which NAS hardware you have.&nbsp; Does your system run 4.1.x firmware or 5.3.x?

It is older 4.1 unit.&nbsp; It stayed at 64% all day, unit was hung up.&nbsp; So I unplugged and trying checkfs again now.&nbsp; I see the boot menu if I hold the power button, so I know how to boot and bypass checkfs if that is advisable.&nbsp; Trying to be careful, and recover without losing data (i can reload/recover if required, but it will take weeks... hoping to avoid that).Editing to ask questions:1) Should I attempt boot and bypass checkfs first?&nbsp; Or attempt boot with 3 drives first?&nbsp; I'm guessing 'bypass checkfs' is the safer option.2) i see in documentation, the factory reset option will do a 5 minute disk test.&nbsp; Then go into a 10 minute wait period, where I can exit back out.&nbsp; Is this a good option to try first?&nbsp; I don't see a way to do a sort of disk test otherwise.

Update...&nbsp; I got it to boot by bypassing the checkfs, and I am able to access the data.&nbsp; I got an alert for Disk 3 showing SMART errors, so far the other 3 do not show errors:&nbsp;Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day. Disk 3: Previous count: 0 Current count: 2 ATA error count has increased in the last day. Disk 3: Previous count: 0 Current count: 1622 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What can I do now to complete the 'checkfs', and to test each disk individually?&nbsp; I will monitor #3 but probably order a replacement.&nbsp; Meanwhile, will keep copying and saving off what I can (I backup some of it, but my USB drive isn't big enough for everything!).
