One concern on that approach to backup is that the SATA connectors on the drives won't hold up. There are some older SATA documents that suggest the connector is good for ~50 insertions. I think that's a minimum, but still it is something to consider.
Overall, the NAS firmware is not designed for that use case. You could exporting a jbod volume from the settings wheel on the volume tab, and then see if the volume comes back when you
- power down the NAS
- insert the jbod volume again
- boot.
