It seems that my problem was not as "cut and dry" as I thought or, more likely, hoped.
The only way the NAS's "user rights" will work properly is when I do a full shut down, setting it for a volume check on start-up, and leaving the device off for a few hours (usually overnight). A restart-only does not do the trick.
Is my NAS faulty?
