Bob - I had a similar problem that was due to the inability of XPP and the NAS to communicate using WINS names in a Workgroup network (ie. no Domain server).
The solution when mapping the shares on the XPP client to connect as a "different user name" and then use an explicit IP address ... for instance (my NAS is at a fixed IP of 10.1.1.5) I would use a user name like "10.1.1.5\Bob" and the appropriate password.
The volume check you mention is I suspect only coincidental - although it does worry me a bit when fsck find lots of issues and fixes them unilaterally. Hopefully they are just empty inodes that are not linked correctly and not data is impacted.
