NETGEAR RN10400: Is it possible to include external usb disk in raid?
Hi all,
Just taken ownership of an RN10400 (my first NAS box). I was wondering if it is possible to connect an external usb drive via the USB port and have it incorporated into the x-raid set-up, or do I need to remove it from the enclosure and install it with the other drives inside the NAS?
Many thanks,
Tom
You can share a USB drive but you cannot add it to the RAID setup.
Removing the drive from the enclosure might work, but is not ideal. Drives intended for NAS (WDC "Red", Seagate "VN") are the best.
Note that if you stray from the drives on the HCL, Netgear can (and frequently will) deny support.

No. That would be terrible. If the USB disk was accidentally disconnected that would lead to problems not to mention the performance of the USB disk would bring down the performance of the array.
If you install the disk in the NAS do note that it will need to be wiped. It would be better in my view to get a new disk to insert into the NAS.- blooooAspirant
Thank you both, I'll steer clear of that idea and stick with the existing internal drives.
