New to ReadyNAS - Need some help with backup options
We are about to purchase a RN31200 with two 2TB drives. We use an online backup company and we'll continue to use them to backup our data remotely (about 500GB). I've been reading through the various manuals and am a little confused over ReadyNAS Replicate and ReadyDrop. Ideally we would like to have a backup on premises that is a mirrored copy of the main NAS server's data and if some hardware failure occurred on the NAS, I could point the users (about 10 of us) to the backed up version. We probably only modify 25-50 documents a day, so I was thinking ReadyDrop might be a good solution. Any help is appreciated as I'm sure It looks like Replicate might be overkill. I'm probably way off base on what I'm doing. Thanks.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredReplicate is a backup solution. If the main unit failed you would need to restore the data from backup. It's a backup not a high-availability solution.

ReadyNAS replicate should be the best option here.
While for readydrop - is more of like a sync between the NAS and the readydrop enabled devices. (more like google drive or dropbox)
description:
ReadyDROP is a new feature on your ReadyNAS storage system that allows you to sync files between your ReadyNAS storage system and ReadyDROP-enabled remote devices. Any file that you put in a ReadyDROP folder on your ReadyNAS system or on ReadyDROP-enabled remote devices, such as a PC or Mac, are synched automatically, in the background, as long as the devices have Internet access. - RXLuminaryHi jason92s,

After talking more about this, I think they would be happy if we could have it work similar to Dropbox. So, if a user changes a file on the ReadyNAS, it's updated/added to an external drive connected to the network. Money is definitely a concern, so I think this might be a viable option. Worst case, I just point them to the external USB drive in the event of a failure until such time that I can rebuild the NAS. Thanks again.

Regarding Dropbox, the ReadyNAS OS 6 models like RN312 allows you to back up data to your Dropbox account. Check pages 235-236 of the ReadyNAS OS 6 software manual: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... ec2014.pdf
